How many months/years of school/collage you need to take to get a career in photography?

Just curious.

My answer is ZERO years. There's nothing that says you have to have a certain number of years of schooling to be a pro at anything in a creative field. For example, I have NEVER taken any classes related to graphic design or web design. It was just a hobby that I developed and learned to make money with. And the photographer I use for this site/calendar. He's been shooting for like 15 years I think and has never taken a class, just worked on perfecting the craft over time and learning by trial & error.

Now if you want to be a doctor, lawyer or accountant or something like that, then yes a certain amount of school is a prerequisite to being a pro. But I think in most creative fields (music producer, photographer, etc.) being a pro just means you are mastered at what you do and know how to profit from it. Any other thoughts?

I agree with R... We do all of the photography for blaqueimage.net and I think we do a decent job for not having any formal education. My suggestion is to get a good camera... the Minolta XTsi is the best for the price. Also, get a 75-300 lens. You will notice the color depth difference. The first thing you should learn to use is the amperage and shutter speed. After that, get deep into lighting. That is an art form in itself. The way to get good at photography is like getting good at anything else... Practice, Practice and more Practice. Good luck.
